West Milford fire, August 16

Just before ten in the morning, West Milford firefighters went to a reported structure fire on Otterhole Road. The fire department said that they found a lot of smoke and flames in front of the house.

According to officials, West Milford was joined at the scene by fire departments from Butler, Bloomingdale, Wanaque, Riverdale, and Pompton Lakes. According to the agency, firefighters initially battled the fire inside the house, but were forced to return outside due to the strong heat and smoke.

No residents were found during the initial search, however officials reported that a family cat with serious smoke inhalation was discovered and was given oxygen by family members. The homeowner received the cat after its condition improved, and he took it to an animal hospital.

After some time, the fire was contained. According to the fire department, two firefighters were sent to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

According to officials, Orange and Rockland turned off the house’s electricity while workers completed an overhaul and left the area around 1:51 p.m.

The cause is being looked into by the West Milford Fire Marshal’s Office.
