11-Foot Shark Pings Off Jersey Shore, Long Island
According to the most recent OCEARCH data, on Friday, June 20, a huge white shark named Dold was spotted just off the coasts of Long Island and New Jersey.
Meet Dold, an 11-foot white shark that just made a pinge between Long Island and New Jersey.
On Friday morning, June 20, Dold sent a ping between NJ and LI.
According to satellite maps, Dold, an 11-foot, 2-inch, 761-pound guy, was pinned east of Sandy Hook at 11:41 a.m., roughly midway between the Garden State and Montauk.
As a component of the OCEARCH Western North Atlantic White Shark Study, Dold was tagged on February 28 around 45 miles off the coast of Georgia and Florida. According to researchers, he has traveled an astounding 2,915 kilometers since then.
He has been named in honor of Dr. Christopher Dold of SeaWorld, a renowned marine conservation pioneer who is recognized for having shaped OCEARCH’s collaborative science method. He is categorized as a subadult male.
OCEARCH claims that Dold’s tagging contributes to the provision of “critical data on the movements and behaviors of this essential apex predator.” Given the increasing number of white sharks in the area, his appearance off the Jersey Shore serves as a reminder of the value of scientific monitoring and beach safety awareness.
