Police Say Sorry After Mistaken ‘High-Risk’ Stop Of Mom, 3 Kids In Virginia
After a local mom and her three kids were unintentionally stopped this week in Lynchburg, Virginia, when her car was falsely reported stolen, the police department is expressing regret, according to officials.
The Lynchburg Police Department
On Monday, June 23, Lynchburg Police Department (LPD) officers conducted a high-risk traffic stop after examining a license plate that was visible through the woman’s car’s rear window.
The government claims that because the license plates were connected to a theft case from Texas, the national database misidentified the car as stolen.
In a statement shared on Facebook this week, LPD stated that a high-risk traffic stop was started in compliance with department policy and out of a sense of caution for officer safety.
Three children were inside the car when the policemen arrived, according to the police.
The police department stated that the “safety and well-being of the children became the top priority, and officers worked quickly to make sure they were unharmed.”
Police added that following an on-scene inquiry, it was soon established that the car was not stolen, and the driver was immediately freed.
According to LPD, officers used the in-car computer to show the motorist the information as it appeared in our system, promoting transparency and helping her comprehend the reason for the stop.
The Virginia agency of Motor Vehicles database is where the error started, according to the agency. Police stated that they are collaborating with the DMV to accelerate changes in order to ensure that this problem doesn’t again.
Officials expressed their genuine sorrow for the error. We acknowledge the stress and damage this scenario had on the person and her family, even though LPD had no control over the false information.
Noting that 38 of the 71 cars reported stolen in Lynchburg so far in 2025 had been successfully recovered by officers, the department underlined its dedication to openness and public confidence.
LPD stated that our first priority is to serve each and every person of our community with respect, equity, and dignity. As we continue to enhance and maintain the highest standards of police, we sincerely appreciate the community’s trust and understanding.
