14-Year-Old Shoots Himself In Hand, Wounds Teen During Wild Patchogue Brawl: Suffolk Police

During a violent altercation in Patchogue, a 14-year-old kid shot himself in the hand while shooting at another teenager, Suffolk County Police said on Thursday, June 26, 2025.

According to police, the incident started at 4:30 p.m. when five male juveniles got into a brawl on Edwards Street, just east of Rider Avenue.

The 14-year-old produced a 9-millimeter handgun during the commotion and fired several shots, hitting a male 17-year-old. The younger adolescent unintentionally shot himself in the hand during the altercation, according to the police.

With severe but non-life-threatening injuries, the 17-year-old was sent to a neighboring hospital. According to police, the 14-year-old was also admitted to the hospital, given treatment, and then released.

The firearm was found close to the site by detectives.

The 14-year-old was taken into custody and accused of the following juvenile offenses:

  • Felony Assault 1st Degree.
  • Felony Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd Degree.

On Friday, June 27, he is expected to appear in Central Islip’s First District Court.

There were no other recorded injuries.
