Multiple Alarms, Scorching Heat: Blaze Goes Up At Apartment High-Rise In Yonkers

Firefighters fought a multi-alarm fire that started at a high-rise apartment complex in Westchester on Wednesday night, June 25, amid intense heat wave conditions.

On Wednesday, June 25, a fire broke out at 354 Nepperhan Ave. in Yonkers.

According to the Yonkers Fire Department, when crews arrived at 354 Nepperhan Ave. in Yonkers, they were greeted by a lot of smoke and fire. Flames were tearing through scaffolding surrounding the structure and many fifth-floor units.

After launching a fierce assault inside the structure, firefighters assisted in the evacuation of a number of persons who were trapped on the top stories. Authorities said that no victims were found during searches of apartments damaged by fire.

The operation was made even riskier by the intense summer heat. The fire brigade needed to sound several alarms to summon more personnel and resources to put out the fire because of the excessive humidity and temperatures that lasted far into the nineties.

Residents who have been relocated are now receiving assistance from the Yonkers Office of Emergency Management and the American Red Cross.
