After more than three weeks in critical care, a US Army veteran and father of four from Maryland passed away, leaving his family and community in ruins.

Mike Minyoung Pyon, 52, passed away in Baltimore on Thursday, June 19, 22 days after being admitted to the hospital and admitted to critical care on May 28.

His wife Andrea, who had just celebrated their 29th wedding anniversary with him earlier that month, was particularly shocked by the death.

According to loved ones, Pyon had been working full-time at Patient First while putting all of his energy into a dream he had been pursuing for four years: starting his own craft distillery.

At last, it was ready to lift off. He was only a few weeks away from being able to focus entirely on it.

Rather, his wife and their children, Dylan, Gavin, Jasmine, and Vittoria, are now coping with loss, sadness, and an unknown future without him as a result of his death.

Before continuing that work with Patient First, Pyon, who was born in Seoul, Korea, worked as a lab tech in the US Army.

Whether it was his work, his home life, or his intense enthusiasm for origami, friends say he brought accuracy, empathy, and quiet strength to everything he touched.

His wife paid homage to him by reflecting on their lives together and the final days before his passing:

On May 10, we commemorated our 29th wedding anniversary,” she remarked. “My dear, I’m very sorry you endured so much suffering.

Allison McGillivray, a family acquaintance, recalled meeting Pyon while he was stationed in Germany almost thirty years ago.

According to her, he had a broad smile and a carefree, playful attitude that made him immediately endearing.

She claimed that he and Andrea created a close-knit family throughout the years, one that was full of adventure, love, and loyalty.

She said that these two had experienced more hardships than they could count. They put a lot of effort into earning their happily ever after and helped one another.

“Their narrative should not have unfolded this way.

Pyon was seen as someone who was always working for something greater, a buddy you could rely on, and a supporter of others.

Another lifelong friend, Tara Baldauf, called him a gentle presence and asked the community to unite in support of his family.

The AGoFundMe, which he started to support his wife and kids, has raised about $4,000 of the $12,000 target.

According to the organizers, the money will be used for immediate household necessities, funeral costs, and providing the family with time to grieve without having to worry about money.

“Andrea and their kids now face not only unimaginable grief, but also the financial strain of losing Mike s income, managing end-of-life expenses, and navigating major life changes,” they stated.

“Andrea has lost her best friend, her co-parent, and her partner in life, and the kids have lost their father far too young.”
