After a serious incident brought westbound traffic to a complete halt, some vehicles even got out of their cars to watch a helicopter land, turning the Fourth of July getaway into a traffic jam on Maryland’s Bay Bridge.
The Chesapeake Bay Bridge’s traffic
Following a multi-vehicle incident involving entrapment on Friday, July 4, at approximately 12:15 p.m., Maryland Transportation Authority officials announced that all lanes were shut on the westbound span of the Bay Bridge/US 50.
At the WB Bay Bridge/US 50, Medivac is on scene. For entrapped multi-vehicle crashes, all WB lanes are still closed. According to a tweet from the MDTA at 12:35 p.m., expect delays in both directions.
Images taken from the bridge revealed a lengthy traffic jam, with a number of individuals getting out of their cars to stand on the bridge’s edge in spite of police warnings.
Officials urged drivers on the Bay Bridge to stay in their cars during the delays caused by the WB incident for their own safety at 12:48 p.m. Please do not get out of your car.
Officials have not confirmed the number of people injured or the extent of those injuries, but the collision seems to involve a tractor-trailer and a passenger car.
All westbound lanes were still blocked as of early afternoon, and as rescue workers worked at the incident, there were delays in both directions.
