According to jail records, Binyomin Kubani, a Beth Medrash Govoha student and father of eight, was arrested last week and is still being held at the Ocean County Jail on suspicion of trying to allure or seduce a youngster into a car.
But according to his community, the arrest represents a serious injustice.
According to Matzav.com, the incident, which garnered national attention from Jewish media outlets, started when Kubani pulled up to a car wash on Route 88 while his toddler was in the car. According to Matzvav.com, Kubani asked a teenage employee if he would be willing to clean the carpets in his house. According to the site, the teenager moved aside, snapped a picture of Kubani, and flagged down a Lakewood police officer who was passing by.
Supporters claim that Kubani drove off without realizing that the encounter would eventually result in his detention.
Video footage shows Kubani departing before the youngster, which contradicts the police report’s purported assertion that the teen ran after being solicited, according to Matzav.com.
Authorities have been contacted by Daily Voice for more information about the event.
On Sunday, July 6, Beth Medrash Govoha issued the following statement: We are appalled and appalled by the injustice and travesty that have occurred. This case’s circumstances reveal a troubling systemic failure.
Rabbi Yosef Heinemann, the yeshiva’s CEO, signed the letter, which referred to Kubani as a revered ben Torah, adored husband, and proud father of seven. It exhorts everyone in the community to join together in defense of justice, truth, and this priceless family.
Video from the gathering showed hundreds of people holding placards of support and participating in a nonviolent protest; many of them were wearing traditional Orthodox Jewish attire.
According to Beth Medrash Govoha, every tool and resource available is being used to clear Kubani’s name.
The letter demands that our beloved student R Binyamin be sent home right now. Until justice is done and this horrible injustice is corrected, we will not stop.
