The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability (OPIA), which is in charge of the inquiry, released a statement stating that the crash occurred just after 12:05 a.m.
According to officials, three scooter riders were stopped by a lieutenant from the Perth Amboy Police Department at State Street and High Street. Two of the motorcyclists fled when the lieutenant turned on his lights and sirens.
According to the AG’s office, the third rider initially slowed and stopped, but then quickly drove north on State Street.
The rider crossed the border into Woodbridge Township, and the lieutenant followed. According to officials, he then turned around and headed back to Perth Amboy after turning off his lights and sirens.
A few minutes after the officer had turned around, Woodbridge police received a 911 report regarding a car accident on State Street, between Arbor Street and Ferry Street, approximately a quarter mile away. Police there discovered the scooter rider in the road, the car a short distance away. At the scene, he was declared dead.
The rider’s identify has not been made public.
Any death that happens during a contact with a law enforcement official must be investigated by the Attorney General’s Office. As mandated by N.J.S.A. 52:17B-107(a)(2), the case will be brought before a grand jury to decide whether charges are appropriate.
The inquiry is still under progress.
