Bodycam Footage Released In Fatal Police Shooting Of NYC Man At Woodbridge Hotel
Body-worn camera footage from the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office’s investigation into the deadly police shooting of a man in New York City at a Woodbridge hotel has been made public.
In June 2024, Karl Gregory was killed in a shooting involving police.
On Thursday, June 13, 2024, Karl Gregory, 46, of New York, was shot and killed by police inside the Royal Albert’s Palace Hotel on King Georges Post Road.
A preliminary investigation indicates that the event started on Wednesday, June 12, the night before, when an electronic license plate reader alerted Edison police. A car connected to a shooting in New York City that left one person critically injured was identified by the system.
The unoccupied car was found in the Royal Albert’s Palace Hotel parking lot by officers from Edison and Woodbridge. Detectives briefed local officers on their investigation after notifying the NYPD.
Gregory exited the elevator with many suitcases just after midnight on June 13 at around 12:21 a.m., while police were interviewing a civilian in the hotel lobby.
Gregory reached into a black backpack after dropping his belongings, according to the authorities. NYPD Detective Matthew Mauro, Gregory, and Woodbridge Officers Drew Krupinski and Justin Nerney exchanged gunfire.
After being shot, Gregory was declared dead at the spot. There was a pistol close to him. During the exchange, Officer Nerney and Detective Mauro were both hit and taken to the hospital. Since then, both have been made available.
Gregory’s family saw the footage before it was made public.
The Office of Public Integrity and Accountability (OPIA), which made public three bodycam recordings from the fatal confrontation, is still investigating the event. The announcement is in line with an Attorney General policy for 2019 that aims to increase openness regarding deadly police encounters.
