Around 2:05 a.m. on Tuesday, July 8, Michael Mayberry, 42, of Aston, was operating a black Nissan Versa when he collided with the rear of a PennDOT RAM 5500 pickup that was parked in the left lane of I-95 South close to mile marker 9.0, according to PSP Troop K Media.
While helping troopers at another crash scene, the PennDOT vehicle activated its arrow board and yellow flashing lights, according to police. It was dry, straight, and brightly lit by lamps. There was no traffic.
Mayberry, who was in the left lane, hit the rear-right side of the stopped truck with the front-left of his Versa because he didn’t see it. His vehicle came to rest across the right lane, facing the other direction, after suffering incapacitating front-end damage.
Mayberry suffered serious injuries and failed to wear a seatbelt. After being taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center by Tinicum Township Fire Company EMS, he was declared deceased.
The 47-year-old Philadelphia resident Michael Leonard, the PennDOT driver, was unharmed since he was buckled up.
Clayton Towing had to tow the Versa from the site, and EVB Towing had to tow the PennDOT truck.
There are no charges pending. Whether drugs or alcohol played a role has not been proven by investigators.
