Explosive Devices, Bomb-Making Material Found Inside Seymour Home: Police

When police discovered what seemed to be homemade explosive devices inside a Connecticut home, what started out as a call for a domestic dispute escalated into a high-stakes police operation.

Bohlin, Joseph H.

Just before 10:30 p.m. on July 3, police were summoned to a residence on Chaden Road in Seymour, where they took 37-year-old Joseph H. Bohlin into custody. According to Seymour police, when authorities entered to seize a pistol that was registered to him, they discovered a number of handmade explosive devices and the supplies needed to make them.

Officers withdrew right away and summoned the State Police Bomb Squad. Emergency management representatives, the Seymour Fire Department, and the Seymour ambulance all arrived and remained on the scene until approximately 9:30 a.m. the next day.

The CT Posthe was informed by Seymour Police Chief John Bucherati that shotgun shells and fireworks were being used throughout the gathering.

“He was using mortar-type fireworks which had been strapped to shotgun ammunition and wired to an electronic igniter, something like what you would see on a grill igniter, to make homemade bombs,” Bucherati told the newspaper.

Numerous charges have been brought against Bohlin, according to Seymour police, including disorderly conduct, interfering with an emergency call, two counts of unlawful bomb manufacturing, illegal explosives possession, and illegal fireworks possession.

According to authorities, Bohlin is being held at the Seymour Police Department on a $150,000 bond.
