You need to know
With 273 contributions from the community, the GoFundMe effort to support Middletown resident Jake Cathers in his fight against Stage 4 pancreatic cancer has raised $38,584 of the $45,000 target. In February, Cathers received a diagnosis of the illness.
In collaboration with Newport This Week, the Newport Gulls are hosting the #CathersStrong fundraiser to collect money for Cathers, who receives weekly chemotherapy treatments at Newport Hospital. Along with his spouse, Leslie, and their three kids, Jackson, Merritt, and Georgia, Cathers resides in Middletown.
Throughout his career, Cathers, a graduate of Rhode Island College and Rogers High School, has been actively committed in community service. In addition to teaching girls’ softball and tennis at several local schools, such as Gaudet Middle School and Middletown High School, he is also a member of the Newport County Regional Special Education Advisory Committee and the board chair of the Middletown Prevention Coalition. In addition, he has coached Middletown Little League girls softball and Unified Volleyball at Middletown High School.
In addition to writing for Newport This Week, Cathers has contributed to The Newport Daily News. Additionally, he keeps a blog where he shares his experiences with Jackson, his kid with Angelman’s Syndrome, a rare genetic condition. He has been recognized in the community by the Women’s Resource Center as a Man Who Makes a Difference and by Newport Life Magazine with the Groundbreak Award.
To celebrate and show support for the local writer and his family, the community is asked to join Jake Cathers Night today (Friday, July 25) at 6:35 p.m. when fans will assemble at Cardines Field for the Newport Gulls game versus the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks. Regine Painting is giving out free posters to the first 250 admirers. Every penny raised goes straight to the Cathers family to help them fight pancreatic cancer.
