Here’s Timing For Severe Storms With Damaging Winds, Flooding Downpours
On a day of intense heat, the Northeast is expected to see a powerful storm system with damaging winds of up to 65 miles per hour.
Orange indicates areas where the strongest storms are predicted for Friday, July 25.
Strong winds are predicted to be produced by thunderstorms on Saturday, July 26, which will extend from northern and central Illinois to portions of Delaware and Maryland.
On Friday, July 25, the heat index—a measure of temperature and humidity—may reach 105 degrees.
There is a considerable danger of heat-related sickness during the hottest part of the day, according to the National Weather Service, which states that Extreme Heat Warning requirements may be satisfied.
Later Friday afternoon, powerful to severe storms will be fueled by the same steamy air.
The hot, humid air mass is expected to clash with a cold front that is sliding east from the Great Lakes, causing a broken line of thunderstorms to spread from upstate New York and western Pennsylvania to New England and the mid-Atlantic.
As the squall line moves southeast, the threat window is approximately from 4 p.m. on Friday to 2 a.m. on Saturday, July 26.
Forecasters predict wind gusts of 55 to 65 mph, which are powerful enough to bring down power lines and trees. Localized flash flooding may result from torrential rainfall rates.(Refer to AccuWeather’s first graphic above.)
Isolated spinning cells along bowing areas of the squall line cannot be ruled out, even though the tornado risk is still low.
A slight cooling will provide some respite behind the front. Saturday will see a decrease in humidity, with highs falling into the mid-80s. It will still be warm, but not quite as hot as Friday.
Areas of Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware are predicted to experience strong storms on Saturday night as they move in from the Midwest. (Click on AccuWeather’s second image above.)
On Saturday, the day will be partly to mostly sunny with moderate temperatures.
The forecast for Sunday, July 27, predicts mild temperatures, largely cloudy sky, and a new possibility of isolated storms in the afternoon and evening.
