You need to know

The New York Yacht Club won its fourth consecutive title in the prestigious sailing competition held at Harbour Court on Sunday when its team, captained by Pete Levesque, sailed to victory in the 23rd New York Yacht Club Invitational Team Race Regatta for the Commodore George R. Hinman Masters Trophy.

Teams of sailors with crew members over 40 and skippers at least 45 years old competed in the three-day regatta, which ended on Sunday after racing from Thursday through the weekend. After winning 17 of 21 races in the preliminary round-robin tournament, Levesque’s team, which included fellow skippers Tom Kinney and Brian Doyle, defeated the Corinthian Yacht Club of Marblehead, Massachusetts, 2-0 in the finals.

According to Levesque, we had a quick crew. Due to our boatspeed, TK and BD are Sonar masters and are essentially in every race as soon as we get off the starting line. With heavy ebb tides and low southerly breezes, the crew competed in races on the club’s fleet of 22 Sonar keelboats.

By defeating third-place finisher Eastport Yacht Club of Maryland 2-1 in the semifinals, Corinthian Yacht Club secured a trip to the finals. The Leonard team from the New York Yacht Club came in fifth, followed by the Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club of Oyster Bay, New York, in fourth place.

Beginning with the Hinman Masters in 2000, the New York Yacht Club established a number of team racing competitions to encourage adult team racing, of which the regatta is a component. Next weekend, the Grandmasters Team Race for skippers 60 and older and the first-ever Great Grandmasters event for skippers 70 and older will take place as part of the club’s sailing schedule.
