According to authorities, a guy from Saratoga County is being charged with several offenses after unintentionally shooting himself in the hand while cleaning an unregistered handgun.

According to the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to a residence on Donnelly Avenue in Stillwater at approximately 2:50 a.m. on Saturday, August 16, regarding a report of an unintentional firearm discharge resulting in a self-inflicted injury.

Investigators found that 28-year-old Matthew Flanagan was cleaning an unauthorized handgun, which they thought was unloaded. According to deputies, he injured his hand when he unintentionally fired the pistol.

Police also found methamphetamine, a large-capacity ammo feeding system, and two assault rifles during a check of the house.

Charged with three counts of criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of a firearm, and criminal possession of a controlled substance, Flanagan was taken into custody the next day.

He was released on his own recognizance pending additional proceedings in Stillwater Town Court after being arraigned in Malta Town Court.
