Ishmoile Mohammed, 59, Drowns In Sailors Haven Rip Current

A South Carolina man drowned on Saturday, August 23, more than a few hours after Hurricane Erin caused the closure of Long Island’s beaches.

Around 2:45 p.m., Suffolk County police say that Ishmoile Mohammed, 59, was swimming in the ocean at Sailors Haven on Fire Island when the current dragged him west.

According to authorities, lifeguards rescued him from the ocean and started life-saving procedures with the help of staff from Fire Island National Seashore.

The report stated that Mohammed was declared deceased after being evacuated to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore.

After Hurricane Erin, New York’s beaches reopened on Saturday afternoon. The beaches were blocked until the morning of Saturday.
