Resident Hospitalized, Dog Rescued After Bedroom Fire In East Rockaway Home: Police
On Saturday, August 23, Nassau County police reported that a bedroom fire had destroyed a house in East Rockaway, sending one person to the hospital.
An ambulance from the East Rockaway Fire Department.
According to the East Rockaway Fire Department, the fire started at a residence on 3rd Avenue at approximately 4:05 p.m. Chief of Department Craig Gelb responded within two minutes of dispatch to see smoke emanating from the two-story house. Gelb sent out a working fire signal after being informed that there were flames at the back of the building.
Firefighters promptly found that another person might still be inside on the second floor when they encountered one tenant and his dog at the front entrance. Crews from Engine 404 and Ladder 403 went inside, stretched a line into the bedroom, and searched. After being securely taken downstairs, the second person left the building.

Additionally responding were Command Post 4091, Ambulance 408, Tactical Support 409, and Engines 405 and 406. The fire departments from Lynbrook, Oceanside, Rockville Centre, and Hewlett provided mutual aid. Woodmere, Island Park, and Lakeview provided standby coverage.
The house was seriously damaged. The fire is thought to have been an accident, and the Nassau County Fire Marshal and Arson Bomb Squad arrived. The displaced resident received assistance from the Red Cross.
