A new DHS National Terrorism Advisory Bulletin released Sunday, June 22, warns that the ongoing confrontation with Iran has created a heightened threat environment in the United States.
A new DHS National Terrorism Advisory Bulletin released Sunday, June 22, warns that the ongoing confrontation with Iran has created a heightened threat environment in the United States.
According to the advisory, while tensions abroad persist, there may be an increase in low-level hacking, conspiracies against American officials, and domestic extremist violence in the upcoming weeks.
The Department of Homeland Security stated in the alert, which is in effect until September 22, that the ongoing conflict in Iran is creating a heightened threat environment in the United States.
Governor Kathy Hochul of New York has responded to the warning by acting immediately.
“The safety of New Yorkers is my top priority,” Hochul stated on Sunday. After President Trump’s pronouncement last night, I met with my senior public safety team and federal and local government colleagues.
There isn’t a specific or plausible threat to New Yorkers that we know of. We are taking this matter very seriously, though, considering New York’s unique international image, she stated.
Along with homeland security, counterterrorism, and cybersecurity specialists, Governor Hochul stated she has maintained regular communication with State Police Superintendent Steven G. James.
According to her, all state agencies, utilities, and other vital infrastructure institutions are constantly on guard in case of any disruptions.
Together with local law enforcement, the MTA and Port Authority have triggered terrorist safeguards as a precaution. Since the beginning of this crisis, the State Police have been conducting safety patrols outside places of worship and other vulnerable locations.
Many people have loved ones in the area, and we have some of the biggest Muslim and Jewish populations in America. “We pray for the safety of our American troops, for a swift deescalation of this conflict, and for enduring peace in the region as we strive to keep New Yorkers safe,” Hochul stated.
What the DHS Bulletin Says
- The Department of Homeland Security says the threat includes:
- Cyberattacks by pro-Iranian hacktivists or Iranian government-affiliated actors
- Plots by violent extremists motivated by anti-Semitic or anti-Israel sentiment
- Possible retaliation against U.S. government officials for past strikes
- Attempts to target critics of the Iranian regime in the U.S.
- Terrorist propaganda calling for violence against U.S. assets in the Middle East
According to the advisory, the conflict may also serve as inspiration for violent extremists and hate crime perpetrators who aim to attack those who are thought to be Jewish, pro-Israel, or connected to the US military or government in the Homeland.
Officials caution that assaults on American soil could become even more likely if Iranian leaders release a religious decree that calls for violence.
The public is being advised by federal officials to exercise caution:
- Call 911 in case of emergency
- Report threats to local police, FBI, or a regional Fusion Center
- Visit DHS s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) for online safety guidance
The warning advises Americans to “Speak Up If You See Something.”
