: Vehicle Flies Off Route 322, Lands On Railroad Tracks, PennDOT Says
A driver was killed when their vehicle launched off Route 22/322 and landed on active railroad tracks in a devastating overnight crash in Dauphin County, PennDOT announced on Monday, June 16.
Norfolk Southern train
The wreck happened just after 3 a.m. in the westbound lanes near mile marker 230 in Reed Township, according to PennDOT spokesperson Fritzi Schreffler. The single vehicle careened off the highway and ended up perched on Norfolk Southern train tracks, triggering a call to halt all rail traffic in the area, Schreffler said.
The Dauphin County Coroner was called to the scene and confirmed at least one fatality. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released.
The crash shut down all westbound lanes between the Route 325/Mountain Road and Route 147/Halifax exits for more than five hours, causing major commuter disruptions. A detour sent drivers over Peter’s Mountain or through Perry County via Route 11/15. Eastbound lanes remained open but experienced heavy delays due to rubbernecking.
Crews finally cleared the scene and reopened the highway around 8:30 a.m., Schreffler said.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by Pennsylvania State Police. Further details will be released once next of kin are notified and the probe is complete.
