Fires Break Out Across Philly As Trash Piles Up Amid Sanitation Strike; Arson Not Ruled Out: PD

As rubbish continues to accumulate despite a work stoppage, fires broke out overnight at many Philadelphia trash collection locations, city authorities said on Friday, July 4.

The fires were put out before they did any damage thanks to the prompt response of the Philadelphia Fire Department. According to police, there were no reported injuries.

In a joint statement, Police Commissioner Kevin J. Bethel and Fire Commissioner Jeffrey Thompson made it clear that this is a significant issue. Any of these fires will be considered significant crimes if it becomes out that they were started on purpose.

Federal officers on the ATF Task Force are assisting the Philadelphia Police Department in their investigation. Anyone proven to be at fault will face charges.

Authorities cautioned that even accidental fires can spread rapidly, particularly on a holiday when backyard fireworks are common. The public was asked to observe the Fourth of July in a responsible manner.

Residents were advised by the Fire Department that flying embers could start new fires, runoff can harm soil and water systems, and smoke from trash fires can be poisonous.

Officials stated, “Please help keep our neighborhoods safe and leave fireworks to the professionals.”
