The host of “Last Week Tonight” made a pitch to minor league baseball teams, offering one team a “very special offer”: a complete rebranding.
The catch? The show is given total authority.
The SeaWolves were announced as the selected team last month, and the Pennsylvania-based team was informed of their destiny on Sunday’s most recent episode of Oliver’s show.
Oliver made the announcement that the Moon Mammoths would make their debut later this month against the Chesapeake Baysox, who will play as the Chesapeake Oyster Catchers and have their own branding problems that were also documented on the show, accompanied by a Bob Costas-voiced hype video.
“Erie, are you ready?” At the end of the video, Costas posed the question while a menacing version of “Take Me Out To The Ballgame” played in the backdrop.
“Eating anything a mammoth eats and playing baseball are the only two things this mammoth is interested in. Additionally, he has run out of whatever a mammoth consumes.
In addition to taking into account well-known local landmarks like the Bicentennial Tower, Oliver said his research team also took user suggestions that had something to do with the weather, like the Erie Shovelers or the Erie Snowplows. However, Oliver was particularly amused by the suggestion about “the huge shopping mall in Erie that is shaped like a gun… That’s an actual thing.”
Coleman told MLB.com, “I believe we could have gathered our staff in a room and created fifty distinct identities, all of which would have been very successful, good, and well-received.” And we wouldn’t be in this situation.
In the end, Oliver and his team decided on the Moon Mammoths, which are thought to be at least 12 thousand years old and named in part for George Moon, a recreational scuba diver who currently resides in Erie after he discovered the fossil of a woolly mammoth in Lake Pleasant by chance.
Here are some behind-the-scenes pictures of Oliver and the Moon Mammoths’ new mascot that were posted to Instagram.
“We think the Moon Mammoth might be the perfect animal to pull from the proverbial lake and represent Erie baseball,” said the late-night host. “And the theme fits, because George Moon still lives in Erie … and two of the 12 men to walk on the moon, two are from Pennsylvania.”
On Saturday, July 19, Oliver, Moon, and the team’s new enormous mascot will be present to usher in the new age of Minor League Baseball in Erie.
