Knife-Wielding Man Stabs DC Cop In Head During CVS Theft Bust: MPD

According to authorities, a police officer in Northwest Washington was stabbed in the head while attempting to apprehend a thieving suspect, and a District man is currently in custody.

According to the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), police responded to a theft in progress at a store in the 2000 block of 8th Street NW at around 8:35 a.m. on Tuesday, June 24.

In the 600 block of Florida Avenue NW, the subject got aggressive and attacked one of the officers as they tried to stop him, according to MPD.

To try to restrain the offender, another officer used OC spray. According to the police, the man then took out a knife and swung it at the officer he had attacked, cutting the officer’s forehead.

As he and other police tried to apprehend a suspect in a theft from CVS, a 3D officer was stabbed in the head today in the 600 block of Florida Ave NW, the DC Police Union confirmed on X.

His head is severely lacerated, but his injuries are not life-threatening. The suspect was taken into custody and charged.

According to MPD, the suspect cooperated with orders from other officers at the scene to drop the knife.

According to MPD and a different X post from the DC Police Department, the wounded officer was sent to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The 45-year-old suspect, Ian Andre Zephryin of Northeast Washington, DC, was taken into custody and accused with:

  • Assault with intent to kill;
  • Felony assault on a police officer;
  • Second-degree theft;
  • Resisting arrest.

Chief of Police Pamela A. Smith stated, “We are still sending our thoughts and prayers to our injured officer.”
