Yonkers’ Grassy Sprain Hardware To Close After 75 Years

After 75 years in operation, a family-run Westchester institution that has provided services to generations of locals is getting ready to close.

After 75 years of operation, Yonkers’ Grassy Sprain Hardware is closing.

On Saturday, June 28, Yonkers’ Grassy Sprain Hardware, located at 590 Tuckahoe Road, will permanently close, signaling the end of an era for the community.

Pearl Speight, the wife of original owner William H. Speight, ran the store, which was founded in 1950 and was also known as Grassy Sprain Paint & Hardware, for more than 50 years. Her son Rodney Rod Speight, his brothers Billy and Chris, and Rod’s son Greg have been working to preserve the family legacy in recent years.

In addition to its paint and equipment, the store’s personal service and strong community ties helped customers get familiar with it.

“This is more than just a store closing; it’s the loss of a true neighborhood institution,” Yonkers Councilmember Anthony Merante stated on Thursday, June 26. He also added that Grassy Sprain Hardware has everything. It will be missed since it was dependable, convenient, and manned by kind individuals.

There is a going out of business sale going now, and it should end on Saturday.
