State authorities say a Maryland man died after being restrained by police during a mental health crisis in Baltimore.
Police Department of Baltimore
The incident occurred near the intersection of West Franklin Street and North Franklintown Road at approximately 9:40 p.m. on Tuesday, June 24, and is currently being investigated by the Maryland Office of the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division (IID), according to officials.
Investigators claim that a man in a marked cruiser approached a Baltimore Police officer who was stopped at a traffic light. The individual was seen repeatedly wandering into the road and appeared to be experiencing a mental health crisis, according to investigators.
According to the IID, the officer made an effort to control the individual for his personal safety. Officers handcuffed and restrained the man’s legs when other BPD officers arrived on the scene.
According to officials, the man lost consciousness about 10:30 p.m. after officers asked for emergency medical assistance, but EMS had not yet arrived. Officers then used a police cruiser to take the man to the hospital.
The IID stated that the individual was declared dead just after three in the morning on June 25.
The inquiry is still underway, and anyone with information, surveillance film, or mobile phone footage is encouraged to get in touch with the IID.
Bodycam footage of the event will be made public throughout the inquiry, and the name of the unconscious guy is anticipated to be made public in a few days.
