Man Learns Fate After Stabbing Grandmother 17 Times In Her Yonkers Apartment

For the vicious 2022 murder of a grandma and great-grandmother inside her Westchester apartment, a 24-year-old man was given the harshest punishment possible.

On Thursday, August 14, Westchester County District Attorney Susan Cacace announced that Deshawn Nunez, of Yonkers, would serve 25 years to life in state prison after entering a guilty plea to second-degree murder in connection with the stabbing death of 68-year-old Renee Spencer.

Nunez killed Spencer by stabbing her more than a dozen times inside her Yonkers apartment on Nepperhan Avenue late on August 9, 2022.

Building management requested a welfare check on behalf of Spencer’s family two days later, on August 11. When Yonkers police officers got there, they discovered her lying on the ground with several stab wounds and blood all over the place.

Only Nunez was observed departing approximately 90 minutes after the incident, although investigators ultimately concluded that Nunez and Spencer had entered the building together late on August 9. Spencer had sustained 17 stab wounds.

When police discovered Nunez on Riverdale Avenue the next day, before her body had even been discovered, he was taken into custody. He is wanted on several warrants and is known to the police. He allegedly made impromptu allegations accusing him of being involved in the murder.

At the scene, a kitchen knife thought to have been used in the assault was found.

Spencer’s family said in a unified statement that was read out after sentencing:

Our family has been permanently impacted by the suffering and trauma brought on by Deshawn Nunez’s conduct; it has impacted our everyday routines, emotional well-being, and sense of security. Every day, we bear the emotional burden of these incidents.

DA Cacace described the murder as senseless and expressed her hope that Spencer’s loved ones would find some kind of peace with the sentence.

Judge George Fufidio imposed the harshest penalty possible on Nunez.
