The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) confirmed a measles case in a passenger who arrived at Washington Dulles International Airport on Tuesday, August 12, according to the Alexandria Health Department (AHD).
Officials claim that the confirmed case involves a person who lives in a different state. To find those who might have been exposed, including travelers on particular planes, health investigators are working.
Concourse B, the main terminal, the TSA security checkpoint, and the shuttle from the main terminal to Concourse B between 1 and 5 p.m. were all possible exposure locations at Dulles.
According to officials, those who were born before 1957 or who have had two doses of the MMR vaccine are exempt from taking action.
Those who attended the exposure sites but are not completely vaccinated should keep an eye out for symptoms for 21 days after the exposure date. Among the symptoms are:
- Runny nose;
- Fever above 101 F;
- Cough;
- Watery, red eyes;
- Rash.
According to experts, get in touch with a healthcare professional as soon as symptoms emerge. If you require medical attention, call your physician in advance of visiting their office or the emergency room to let them know you could have been exposed to measles and request that they contact the local health department. This call will help safeguard staff and other patients.
Three measles cases have been reported in Virginia so far in 2025. Health officials in Alexandria are asking citizens to make sure their vaccinations are current.
