More than 900 swimmers and volunteers will gather at Scarborough North State Beach in Narragansett on Saturday, Sept. 6, for the 16th annual Swim Across America Rhode Island Open Water Swim, one of the nation s largest charity swimming events.
Due to boardwalk construction, the event—which offers swim options of quarter-mile, half-mile, and one-mile—has been temporarily moved from Roger Wheeler State Beach. Swimmers enter the water in waves according to their selected distance at 10:15 a.m., with registration opening at 8 a.m. Prior to the safety briefing at 10 a.m., speakers from Why I Swim will be featured at the welcoming ceremony, which starts at 9:30 a.m.
Swim the Rhode Island Open Water in America According to event director Douglas Sayles, swimming is a fantastic day for hope and a poor day for cancer. We unite every September to celebrate and support researchers, caregivers, and cancer survivors in our common goal of funding life-saving research, rather than to compete.
In order to assist cancer research at Women & Infants Hospital’s Program in Women’s Oncology, the Rhode Island event has raised around $3 million since 2010. In order to increase early diagnosis, the funding helped establish a clinical risk algorithm and ovarian cancer biomarker that are currently in use worldwide. The swimming and diving teams from Providence College and Bryant University are presently leading the 41 competing teams in the fundraising challenge, which has a $325,000 goal this year.
22 Southern New England college teams participate in the tournament, which also provides a virtual participation option for those who are unable to attend in person. Since 1987, Swim Across America has generated over $120 million nationwide for cancer research and has funded clinical trials that have helped develop cancer immunotherapies that have received FDA approval.
