Newport, good morning! The 229th day of 2025 is today, Sunday, August 17. The year has 136 days remaining.
You need to know
NEWPORTDue to high levels of germs, Easton’s Beach will remain closed to swimmers for a third day on Sunday. Two other beaches in Newport have been reopened for swimming following a temporary closure.
The reopening of Gooseberry Beach and Spouting Rock Beach Association to swimmers was announced by the Rhode Island Department of Health on Saturday. Testing on Thursday showed high levels of germs, leading to the closure of both beaches.
However, swimmers are still not permitted on Easton’s Beach. State health officials have not yet cleared the crowded First Beach, which was closed Friday owing to elevated bacterial counts.
Spouting Rock and Gooseberry beaches’ prompt reopening demonstrates how quickly summertime water quality can fluctuate. Before the bacterial levels returned to safe levels, both sites were only closed for two days.
The beach problems in Newport are indicative of larger water quality problems in Rhode Island this summer, as over 20 areas have been closed since late June because of bacterial contamination.
Through Labor Day weekend, the state health department will continue to monitor the water quality at all Newport beaches; however, the status could change based on new test findings.Closures are initiated when the number of colony forming units (cfu) in saltwater samples surpasses 60 cfu/100 ml.
For up-to-date information on beach closures, beachgoers can visit health.ri.gov/beaches or call RIDOH’s beaches information line at 401-222-2751.
