Multiple construction projects will impact traffic across Newport County next week, with lane restrictions and closures scheduled on major routes including Route 138 and the Newport Claiborne Pell Bridge.
Ongoing Projects
Middletown
continues to see the most significant construction activity with pavement improvements along East Main Road. The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) has implemented lane shifts in both directions of Route 138 between Meadow Lane and Boulevard Nurseries Garden Center. The work, which runs Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., involves installing new precast concrete curbing and reconstructing drainage structures in the northbound lanes.
Week of July 12-18 Schedule
Newport Claiborne Pell Bridge
will experience eastbound right lane closures from July 14-17, running 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, according to the Rhode Island Turnpike & Bridge Authority (RITBA). The authority has transitioned to all-electronic cashless tolling on the bridge.
Tiverton
faces construction on two fronts next week. Route 77 will see overnight sweeping operations Monday night from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m., with crews working in a moving operation from the Massachusetts line to the Little Compton town line. Additionally, sidewalk and wheelchair ramp installation will require left and right shoulder closures on Route 138 (Main Road) between addresses 242 and 258, scheduled Wednesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Other major bridges in the region – including the Jamestown Verrazzano Bridge, Route 138 Connector, Mount Hope Bridge, and Sakonnet River Bridge – have no planned lane closures for the upcoming week.
RITBA notes that all schedules are subject to change and encourages drivers to check real-time traffic updates at ritba.org/travel-alerts or follow @RIEZPASS on X for current information.
Motorists should plan for delays and consider alternate routes when possible during construction hours.
