Newport launches major $3 million roadway improvement blitz across 18 streets

Published On:

Newport is embarking on its most ambitious roadway improvement project in nearly a decade, with 18 streets across the city set to receive major upgrades as part of a $3 million investment made possible by the 2024 General Obligation Bond.

The annual Roadway Improvement Program kicked off this month with contractor Pawtucket Hot Mix Asphalt (PHMA) beginning work on Prescott Hall Road, where crews are installing new pavement, curbing, and sidewalks. The project represents a significant expansion from the city’s typical $1 million annual road repair budget.

Major Overhauls Planned

The comprehensive improvement list includes complete roadway pavement and sidewalk replacement on Albro Street, Allan Court, Ayrault Street (from Kay Street to Catherine Street), Barney Court, Barney Street, Congdon Avenue, Court House Street, Fillmore Street, Heath Street, Johnson Court, Kingston Avenue, Pearl Street, Prescott Hall Road, Russo Court, Southmayd Street, Stewart Street, Tilley Avenue, and Tompkins Court.

Spring Street, which underwent significant work as part of a water main improvement project last year, will also receive repaving in the coming weeks.

What to Expect

The improvements include resurfacing pavement, replacing sidewalks in poor condition, resetting curbing, and other miscellaneous work items. Residents will be informed by the contractor prior to construction starting on any given roadway.

Property access will be maintained throughout construction, though residents should expect some inconveniences as roadways are repaved, driveways replaced, and concrete sidewalks poured. Parking may be restricted during working hours from 7 AM to 4 PM as necessary to complete construction. The contractor will place “No Parking” signs prior to construction start and inform residents of impending work.

Timeline and Process

While the initial paving work is expected to move quickly, sidewalk and curbing improvements will stretch into fall before the final coat of pavement is placed. The city notes that more information will become available as work progresses.

For the better part of a decade, Newport’s annual operating budget has allocated roughly $1 million for roadway repairs annually on average. However, the passage of the 2024 GO Bond significantly increased that number to over $3 million.
