Newport’s Department of Utilities will launch a new billing system in mid-August that officials say will provide enhanced features and eliminate payment processing fees, but customers will face a temporary disruption in online payment options during the transition.
The upgraded system promises a more intuitive interface and expanded payment options including Venmo and Google Pay. The Department of Utilities will absorb all payment processing fees, including credit card charges, once operational.
However, the transition requires deactivating online payments from July 30 through mid-August — approximately two weeks when customers cannot pay bills electronically.
Payment Changes
The current online system shuts down July 30, with final automatic payments processing July 31. The Collections Office at City Hall will also stop accepting utility payments July 31, transferring all collection responsibilities to the Department of Utilities.
During the blackout period, customers must pay in person at 70 Halsey Street (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.) or mail payments to the Department of Utilities at PO Box 1195, Providence, RI 02901-1195.
New System Requirements
All customers must create new online accounts with new Customer Identification numbers provided in August bills. While billing history and usage data will transfer, customers must re-enter payment information and re-enroll in autopay.
The August bill will be generated in the old system on August 1, but the first bill under the new system won’t be issued until September 1.
Enhanced Features
The new platform will offer account history viewing, billing preference management, paperless billing, and pay-by-text options alongside the expanded payment methods.
