Obituary: Patrick J. Crookes

On Thursday, August 14, 2025, Patrick John Crookes, 77, of Warwick, RI, died quietly at the West Roxbury VA Medical Center in West Roxbury, MA, surrounded by his loved ones.

The late Arthur Crookes Jr. and Kathleen O. Brien Crookes welcomed Patrick into the world on December 6, 1947, in Newport, Rhode Island, where he spent the most of his life.

Patrick graduated from Newport’s Rogers High School in 1967. He started serving in the US Army shortly after graduating. He served three years in Vietnam as a door gunner on a military helicopter before rising to the rank of Corporal. Up until 1973, he remained in the Army Reserves at Fort Hood, Texas. The National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with Silver Service Star, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Aircraft Crewman Badge, and Sharpshooter (Rifle) are just a few of the honors and recognitions that Patrick received while serving in the military.


Patrick studied psychology at Salve Regina University. He worked with General Dynamics Electric Boat for many years as a welding supervisor at Quonset Air Base (North Kingstown, RI). After this, he founded S&C Construction, his own construction company. After that, Patrick worked as a bartender for many years at his family’s Irish American pub on Thames Street in Newport.

Pat, also known as Patrick, liked music and was proficient on a variety of instruments, but his favorite was the guitar. He was a huge fan of golf, tennis, football, and baseball. His chuckle was contagious and he never stopped laughing. He cherished the time he spent with his family and grandchildren.

Siobhan Crookes of Warwick, Rhode Island, and Colleen Crookes of North Kingstown, Rhode Island, are Patrick’s devoted daughters and his surviving family. Additionally, by his adoring grandchildren Hunter Mooney, Juliet Crookes, and Konnor Barbour. John Crookes and Arthur Crookes III, Patrick’s two brothers, as well as numerous nephews, nieces, aunts, uncles, cousins, relatives, and friends, will all miss him terribly.

James Crookes and Dennis Crookes, his two brothers, died before him.

The O Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, located at 465 Spring St. in Newport, will have visiting hours on Wednesday, August 20, from 4 to 7 p.m. At 10:30 AM on Thursday, August 21, a funeral service with military honors will take place in the chapel at the RI Veterans Memorial Cemetery, located at 301 South County Trail, Exeter, RI.
