According to State Police, the detail, which was carried out in Yorktown on Wednesday, August 13, by the New York State Department of Transportation and New York State Police, was a component of Operation Hard Hat, which targets careless and reckless driving in highway work zones.

The citations included two for breaking New York’s Move Over legislation, eight for using a cell phone, and thirty-two for speeding. According to authorities, more summonses were sent out for various traffic infractions.

According to State Police, the program encourages drivers to slow down, yield to stopped cars, stay focused, and follow posted signs in all work zones in order to safeguard roadside workers, emergency responders, and drivers.

A statewide operation called Operation Hard Hat frequently uses troopers disguised as construction workers to identify infractions from within active work zones.
