On Friday, August 8, in Croydon, Ed Margavich, 80, was hurt while he was responding to a van fire that had spread to a nearby house, according to officials. Arson was later identified as the cause of the fire.

According to the department, Margavich, a lifelong member of the fire company who joined in 1960, was directing traffic at the scene before heading back to the firehouse to retrieve equipment. He shattered his femur after falling inside. He received treatment, but his health deteriorated, and last week he passed away from his wounds.

The fire also injured two additional firefighters.

Station 14 has lost a fireman in the line of duty for the first time in its 70-year history.

Throughout his career, Margavich progressed through the ranks to become Chief and then Fire Police Captain, but he continued to be one of the most involved members of the team, frequently responding to emergencies in the middle of the night. According to the department’s statement, he was well-known for his generosity, insight, and contagious laughter, which made our sessions more enjoyable.

The flag is now flying at half-staff outside Station 14. Margavich’s red fire truck is still parked outside the bay doors, and a monument rests on the front steps where flowers have started to gather.

Additionally, a public memorial has been erected in front of the firehouse.
