Popular NY Supermarket Raided By ICE Agents, Sparking Community Outcry

In a spectacular immigration raid, federal investigators flooded a busy supermarket in New York, forcing the establishment to close for the day. Instead of fresh food, shoppers were greeted by flashing lights and caution tape.

Just outside of Buffalo in Amherst, New York, is the Asia Food Market.

The event took place just outside Buffalo in the town of Amherst on Wednesday morning, July 30.

Locals and business owners are worried about the raid’s potential effects on the town as a whole.

Asia Food Market was cordoned off and all business operations were suspended as US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents executed a search warrant there at around 10 a.m.

According to Buffalo’s CBS affiliate WKBW, the officers who carried out the raid had a warrant.

According to Buffalo’s NBC affiliate WGRZ, the raid, which also featured the FBI and IRS Criminal Investigation Division, led to the arrest of multiple employees and the confiscation of computers, smartphones, and company documents.

The supermarket’s attorney, Alejandro Gutirrez, challenged the operation’s scope.

About 17 automobiles are sitting here to pick up roughly six persons, as you can see,” he told WGRZ. “It restricts due process, is inefficient, and is unneeded.

According to the source, he contended that federal investigators could have obtained the documents without closing the store and feels that these raids unfairly single out immigrant-owned companies that support and uplift their communities.

WKBW was informed by Lee Sobieski, another lawyer for the store, that “it’s not only harassment, it’s frankly, just a bad waste of resources, and frankly, just nonsensical.”
