Postal Worker From Union City Stole Credit Cards On Her Mail Route, North Bergen Police Say

According to officials, a Union City postal worker has been accused in relation to a credit card fraud scheme that preyed on locals along her mail route in North Bergen.

Both Awilda Taveras-Bido and Eirin Novas

According to a news release issued Friday, August 1, North Bergen Police Chief Robert J. Farley Jr. announced that Eirin Novas, 39, had been detained on Friday, July 25, and charged with conspiracy, credit card theft, and fraudulent credit card use.

In addition, Awilda Taveras-Bido, 46, of Newark, was accused of conspiracy, credit card theft, fraudulent credit card usage, and cardholder intent to defraud. After being taken into custody, she was freed upon a summons.

The plan allegedly came to an end on June 16 after a resident of North Bergen called the police to report that more than $4,000 in unlawful payments had been made on a Capital One credit card that had been issued in her name.

According to authorities, she was unaware that a Capital One credit card had been issued in her name and that more than $4,000 had been spent on illegal activities. Only after obtaining a billing statement did the victim learn of it.

After visiting several locations, detectives determined that Taveras-Bido was a suspect. After some research, detectives found Novas, who they claim was stealing credit cards and other mail while delivering along her postal route in North Bergen.

According to the press statement, Novas took mail—specifically credit cards—that was addressed to locals while she was delivering in North Bergen. Taveras-Bido allegedly received those cards from her and used them to make many fraudulent credit card purchases.

In order to keep victims from learning that accounts had been opened fraudulently in their names, investigators claim that Novas allegedly intercepted credit card statements.

Authorities think there might be more victims. North Bergen detectives can be reached at 201-392-2100 or via email at [email protected]. Every tip will be kept private.
