A growing number of products have been removed from shop shelves due to potential radioactive contamination, including Walmart’s well-known Great Value brand.
A voluntary recall of a few lots of Great Value Frozen Raw Shrimp EZ-Peel & Deveined Tail-On 21-25 Per lb was announced by Beaver Street Fisheries, LLC of Jacksonville, Florida, in response to a warning from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) about possible exposure to the man-made radioactive isotope Cesium-137.
Between Monday, July 28 and Thursday, August 7, the impacted shrimp were sold at a few Walmart locations and distributed to 13 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, and West Virginia.
The FDA first alerted customers about potentially radioactive shrimp sold at Walmart a few days prior to its most recent action.
A second, larger recall involving several brands, including Sand Bar, Arctic Shores, Best Yet, Great American, and First Street, sold by Southwind Foods, LLC in nine states, resulted from the agency’s inquiry.

The recalls are due to worries that Cesium-137 may have been present in shrimp processed by PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati, an Indonesian supplier, during handling or transportation.
The FDA is exercising extreme caution because of the possible long-term cancer risk linked to repetitive low-dose exposure to radioactive materials, even though the agency has declared that no product testing positive for the isotope has entered US commerce.
Consumers are advised to check their freezers for the recalled shrimp, which are identifiable by UPC 078742133898 and lot codes 8005540-1, 8005538-1, and 8005539-1. The shrimp have a best by date of March 15, 2027, and no illnesses have been reported as of yet.
Those who bought the impacted products should not eat them and should return the shrimp to the store for a complete refund or throw them away.
