According to Lt. John Behr, the Hasbrouck Heights Police Department was notified of an ongoing vehicle burglary on the 200 block of Bell Avenue at around 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday, August 12. According to Behr, when officers Cooke, Renna, Sanchez, and Ciminata arrived on the scene, they saw a man who fit the description—later identified as Matthew T. Jolls—walking up a driveway.
According to Behr, the caller was tracking the suspect and sending real-time updates to the HHPD communications center. Police then discovered that Jolls had urinated on a resident’s front lawn after breaking into several cars.
According to authorities, Jolls was placed under arrest. Police said that Jolls started kicking and spitting inside the patrol car after being put inside.
Jolls continued to act irascibly upon arriving at headquarters, kicking cops and spitting in the faces and eyes of many officers, according to police. Jolls declared his intention to obtain a firearm and return to murder the officers.
Three counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, three counts of throwing bodily fluid at a law enforcement officer, one count of terroristic threats for threatening to kill officers with a firearm, one count of failing to make lawful disposition of CDS to a law enforcement officer, one count of tampering with physical evidence, and two counts of burglary to a motor vehicle were among the charges against Jolls, according to the police.
Jolls had already encountered local cops. He was taken into custody for events in Hasbrouck Heights and Lodi in June.
According to authorities, Jolls was taken to New Bridge Medical Center in Paramus in the most recent incident, after which the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office took possession of him. According to police, two cops from Hasbrouck Heights were taken to Hackensack University Medical Center, treated, and then released.
According to officials, the Wood-Ridge officials helped with responding to service calls in the borough during the event.
