Amber Geier Dies Days Before Trial In Daughter s Death

Days before her trial, a New York mom who was charged with her disabled daughter’s death passed away.

In connection with the death of her 24-year-old daughter, Skylar Pettit (left), Amber Geier (right) faces manslaughter charges.

Amber Geier, 46, of Rotterdam, passed away on Thursday, August 14, from severe septic shock caused by a bowel perforation, according to the Schenectady County District Attorney’s Office.

According to the Daily Voice, Geier was charged last year in relation to the death of her 24-year-old daughter, Skylar Pettit, who depended on her for care and had diabetes and Down syndrome.

According to the prosecution, Geier, a nurse practitioner, killed her daughter in February 2022 by ceasing to provide her with the insulin she required.

Before authorities found the young woman’s body during a welfare check in July 2023, it had been wrapped in plastic inside their Rotterdam home on Greenpoint Avenue for months.

Geier was also charged by the prosecution with continuing to receive thousands of dollars in Social Security disability benefits for her daughter for several months after her death.

After being taken into custody in 2023, she was charged with second-degree manslaughter, grand larceny, concealing a corpse, and animal cruelty for puppies who were purportedly discovered in harsh circumstances.

Geier turned down a plea agreement in December 2024 that would have resulted in a four- to 12-year prison term. Her trial was scheduled for early this week.

According to a DA spokesperson, prosecutors formally asked for the case to be dismissed after her death, and a Schenectady County judge approved their request on Thursday, August 14.
