The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office said that 52-year-old Steven Menefee of Clairton was the second person killed in Monday’s tragic explosion at the U.S. Steel Clairton Coke Works.

After being removed from the debris Monday night, Menefee was declared dead at the spot, according to authorities. Just before 11 a.m. on August 11, a blast ripped through the country’s largest coke manufacturing facility, killing him and Timothy Quinn, 39, of Westmoreland County.

The tragedy also harmed ten other people. According to officials, five remained in critical but stable condition at the hospital into Tuesday evening. Three patients were still in the hospital at UPMC Mercy as of Wednesday afternoon, while two patients at AHN facilities had been released.

Jefferson Hospital treated and released the five other injured guys on Monday.

According to officials on Tuesday, hydrogen sulfide levels have stayed below the state-established cutoff.

The cause of the explosion is still being investigated by ATF, the County Fire Marshal, and the Homicide Unit of the Allegheny County Police Department. Authorities have pledged to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the fatal explosion.

About 1,300 people are employed at the Clairton Coke Works, which produces about 4.3 million tons of coke a year and is situated along the Monongahela River about 20 miles south of Pittsburgh. The facility has been run by USS for 109 years.
