According to forecasters, on July 31, a waterspout that rated as an EF-0 tornado briefly made landfall in Eastport and formed over Spa Creek, close to the US Naval Academy.

The tornado was detected just after 2:45 p.m. on Thursday, with peak speeds of 65 mph, according to the National Weather Service. Its maximum width was 25 yards, and its length was under 0.1 miles.

Before returning to the Severn River as a waterspout, the waterspout caused minor damage to a number of boats as it came ashore at the Severn Sailing Association.

The National Weather Service said that an eyewitness witnessed the waterspout pass over the marina and ashore.

“In the parking lot, they recorded a couple small boats that were blown over by the wind while being trailered and parked.

“The circulation moved quickly back over water over the mouth of the Severn River where additional social media video showed it as viewed from near the Route 450 bridge.”
