The Rhode Island Department of Health announced Tuesday that Easton s Beach in Newport has been cleared for swimming after bacteria levels returned to safe standards.
According to RIDOH officials, the well-known Newport beach reopened Tuesday after being shuttered for four days on August 15 owing to high bacterial levels.
By detecting enterococcus bacterial concentrations, the department keeps an eye on the quality of the beach water. In freshwater and saltwater environments, swimming advisories are issued when bacterial concentrations above 60 colony-forming units per 100 milliliters of water.
Through Labor Day weekend, RIDOH will continue to monitor the quality of the beach water; however, conditions could change as new information becomes available.
RIDOH’s recorded message line at 401-222-2751 has the latest up-to-date beach information. The department’s beach closure database also provides internet access to updated closure data.
After being temporarily closed this summer, Easton’s Beach is one of numerous beaches in Rhode Island that have just reopened. Spouting Rock Beach Association and Gooseberry Beach, two more Newport beaches, were also temporarily blocked last week but have since reopened.
Only water activities are impacted by beach closures; during advisories, beach amenities are still accessible to the general public.
Residents can visit RIDOH’s website or give the beaches information line a call for the most recent information on beach conditions around Rhode Island.
