Stunning Summer Sky Events Include Thunder Moon, Fireballs, Milky Way Glow

This month, the sky will be illuminated by more than just fireworks.

In July, there will be more than just fireworks to light up the sky.

Beginning on Thursday, July 10, the Thunder Moon will rise, marking the first of three celestial displays this month for stargazers.

This dazzling full moon, named for the seasonal storms that rage throughout North America, will rise in the southeastern sky at nightfall. It will shine all night long until disappearing close to dawn.

Something much more spectacular will light up the skies later this month: a rare doubleheader of meteor showers.

On the evening of Tuesday, July 29, and into the early hours of Wednesday, July 30, the Southern Delta Aquariids and Alpha Capricornids will peak concurrently, producing up to 30 meteors per hour.

According to the American Meteor Society, some of the brightest may even show up as fireballs, which are blazing streaks.

One of the best opportunities of the year to see the Milky Way, which is more visible in the summer when Earth’s night side faces the galaxy’s core, adds to the spectacle.

There is more to the show than that. Up until the beginning of August, both meteor showers are still active, providing opportunities for numerous nights of stargazing.
