Teen Killed In SEPTA Shooting Has Man Claiming Self-Defense: Philadelphia Police
Investigators said Friday night, Aug. 15, a man was attacked on SEPTA’s Broad Street Line in North Philadelphia and then shot and murdered another rider.
A train operated by SEPTA.
Inspector D.F. Pace of the Philadelphia Police Department said the incident occurred on a northbound train at Girard Avenue shortly after 7:30 p.m.
According to Pace, an 18-year-old guy was pacing the rail car when he allegedly started punching another rider without warning, repeatedly slapping him in the face. According to authorities, the 18-year-old kept hitting the man even after he had fallen to the ground.
According to Pace, the motorcyclist then shot the teenage assailant after drawing a weapon that was lawfully carried.
Philadelphia police responded immediately to the gunfire. When officers entered the underground, they discovered that the 18-year-old had been shot. At 8:09 p.m., he was declared dead at Temple University Hospital after being transported there, according to the police.
Investigators said the gunman, who is licensed to carry a firearm, waved down cops after exiting the train and claimed to have shot someone in self-defense after being attacked. He is receiving treatment for his head injuries at a neighboring hospital and is assisting the police.
According to Pace, the entire incident was filmed on the SEPTA rail car’s surveillance cameras. The Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office is still investigating the case.
The individual who was killed has not yet been identified.
Police are asking anyone with knowledge to call them at 215-686-TIPS.
