Small cities with unique appeal and a healthy dose of the unexpected are highlighted in CNN Travel’s second annual poll of America’s Best Towns To Visit.

The publication solicited nominations from its contributors and readers.

Then, by assessing each town’s attractions, food and drink options, nightlife and cultural scenes, identity, diversity, accessibility to other places, and overall wow factor, the field was reduced.

Accessibility and accommodation were also taken into account.

With populations ranging from 15,000 to 115,000, this year’s winners have a smaller skew than those from last year.

From ancient fishing harbors to independent art havens, river towns to music capitals, they all share what CNN refers to as the best of a beautiful country.
