The Metropolitan Police Department was already offering a $25,000 reward for information that led to the arrest and conviction of the suspect or suspects responsible for the shooting death of 21-year-old Granby, Massachusetts resident Eric Tarpinian-Jachym. On Tuesday, July 8, the FBI’s Washington Field Office increased that amount by $15,000.
Tarpinian-Jachym was shot and killed near the junction of 7th and M Street NW in Washington, DC, just a few streets from the office where he was interning for Kansas Congressman Ron Estes. The increased incentive was announced more than a week after the shooting.
On Monday, June 30 at approximately 10:28 p.m., officers were called to the 1200 block of 7th Street NW in response to gunfire.
Upon their arrival, they discovered three casualties with gunshot wounds: a 16-year-old boy, a woman who was conscious, and an unconscious male.
Following the failure of resuscitation measures, Tarpinian-Jachym passed away from his wounds the following day, Tuesday, July 1, after all three were taken to nearby hospitals.
According to a preliminary investigation, several suspects exited a car and started shooting at a crowd of people.
The suspect vehicle has now been found, and investigators do not think the college intern was the intended target.
Tarpinian-Jachym, a University of Massachusetts Amherst rising senior, had barely begun his internship in the Estes office in June.
He had previously served as a fellow at Advanced Advocacy in Washington, DC, and was currently pursuing a degree in political science and finance.
In a statement, Congressman Estes said, “I will never forget his warm heart and the way he always greeted anyone who entered our office with a cheerful smile.” We appreciate Eric’s service to the nation and the 4th District of Kansas.
During this painful time, please join Susan and me in praying for his family and honoring their privacy.
The combined efforts of the FBI and MPD have increased the total prize to $40,000.
The shooting is still under investigation.
