US Issues New Travel Warnings For These 2 Nations

Travelers are being cautioned by the United States to reconsider their plans to visit certain regions of Southeast Asia.

The State Department stresses that it is very limited in what it can do to help Americans in Haiti.

An increasing border conflict that has already claimed dozens of lives is linked to increased hazards in Thailand and Cambodia, according to a new advisory.

The State Department issued a Level 4: Do Not Travel notice for regions within 50 kilometers of the Cambodia-Thailand border on Friday, updating its advise to raise both countries to Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution overall.

Recent conflicts between the two nations’ forces have claimed the lives of at least 32 individuals, including allegations of artillery and rocket fire. The border areas have seen tens of thousands of people evacuated.

Travelers visiting Cambodia are advised to be vigilant of crime, which includes the risk of landmines in provinces like Battambang, Siem Reap, and Pailin, as well as the regular snatchings of phones and bags in Phnom Penh.

The southern Thai provinces of Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat, which are still under a state of emergency, are the scene of insurgent activity, according to officials.

The State Department emphasizes that tourists should prepare evacuation plans independent of US government assistance, sign up for updates through the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), and refrain from actively resisting robbery attempts.

Advisory Levels of the State Department

The US government use the following four-level approach to assist passengers in evaluating the threats to their safety when traveling abroad:

  • Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions
  • Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution
  • Level 3: Reconsider Travel
  • Level 4: Do Not Travel
