When a teen was wounded and a fire started during the post-fireworks chaos near Madison Avenue and Swan Street, New York State Police released the dramatic footage on Wednesday, July 9, showing troopers dashing into smoke-filled buildings and negotiating blazing debris.

It all started about ten o’clock at night. On Friday, July 4, as people were leaving the city’s Independence Day festivities, gunshots were heard close to 337 Madison Avenue. Meanwhile, a fire broke out in a building nearby, endangering the lives of people living in adjoining row houses.

Trooper Thomas Stiehler can be seen in the video entering a burning building and assisting terrified people in leaving. He turned to the nearby rowhouse when smoke and flames barred his way, climbing many flights to save an old woman and carried her to safety.

Stiehler then re-entered the building with Trooper Zachary Deaprix to empty the remaining apartments.

In the unit right beneath the fire, Trooper James McGill fought flames in another location. As flames shower down from windows above, he is shown on his bodycam escorting folks out.

It all took place behind the backdrop of an ongoing gunfire incident. Nearby, a teenage guy had been discovered with a head wound from a gunshot. While firemen battled the flames, troopers provided emergency assistance.

According to State Police, the bodycam film was made public to highlight the first responders’ exceptional bravery and professionalism.

Superintendent Seven James remarked, “These Troopers’ and our partners’ actions from the Albany Police Department demonstrate extraordinary courage and professionalism.”

Our members did everything they could to save lives as they dashed into blazing buildings and toward gunfire. Serving the citizens of New York means this.

The gunshot and the origin of the fire are still being looked into by the Albany Police Department, Fire Department, and Office of Fire Prevention and Control. It took some time to find out the teen’s condition.
