Investigators say a guy from Charles County allegedly returned to his wife’s room with a gas can in hand after agreeing to keep the peace after a domestic quarrel by sleeping on his side of the house.
Harrison, Omar Shariff
According to the Maryland State Fire Marshal, Omar Shariff Harrison, 49, of Waldorf, was taken into custody early Friday, August 1, after he allegedly poured gasoline on his wife’s bed and set the sheets on fire.
Their children were sleeping when the horrifying tragedy occurred in the 3000 block of Eutaw Forest Drive at around five in the morning.
According to authorities, deputies had been called to the same residence the previous evening due to a domestic conflict. Harrison and his spouse decided to spend the evening apart and remain in different areas of the house until tensions subsided.
Rather, the situation just heated up.
Investigators said that Harrison’s wife woke up early the following morning to the sound of him moving around the house. Harrison is accused of entering her bedroom at that point, dousing her bed with gasoline, pouring a path of fuel down the stairs, and setting the linens on fire.
After safely leaving the house with their two kids, she dialed 911.
After responding, Deputy State Fire Marshals and K9 Taylor concluded that Harrison had started the fire, put it out, and then fled.
The estimated damage to the house was only about $500.
According to investigators, Harrison had threatened to set the house on fire before, and the arson was directly connected to the continuing marital conflict.
Following a traffic stop, he was brought to the Charles County Detention Center and detained.
Harrison faces the following charges:
- Attempted murder;
- First-degree arson;
- Second-degree arson;
- First-degree malicious burning;
- Reckless endangerment;
- Arson threat.
A bond review is pending as he is being held at the Charles County Detention Center.
